ID help: eggplant shaped avocado?
« on: May 04, 2017, 08:09:23 PM »
Does anyone recognize this avocado variety? All fruits are shaped like eggplant (?), received them overripe, dark thin skin, very creamy flesh.

Apparently it could be mexicola grande, with edible skin and all.
The only thing is, the harvest season is usually winter, and it's already May!

I have this variety grafted and looks like I may have fruits for next season. Actually, my friend alleges he gets 2 crops on the gigantic mother tree, July and January respectively. Anyways, will see.

That's an interesting looking avo.  We've got a few here that look somewhat similar but none that seems an exact match.  I have attached a link for Ken Love's "Big Island Avocados" -- http://bigislandnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/AvocadoPoster.jpg

I think the shape is just an odd seedling thing. Other characteristics such as paper-thin edible skin speaks more about its origin.

Most likely a seedling... Where did your friend get it?

I assume it's a seedling tree.
Tree is gigantic. Very difficult to pick fruits from. Lots of fallen fruits when I visited my friend, and considering the thin skin its chances against squirrels are slim.
