Several fruits on the tree are quite large and light golden in color. They are, however, rather hard still.

Same with mine. I picked one early, it ripened in about 1 week, planning to try today.

Update. Tried today, was absolutely delicious. Not bitter at all (not counting skin). Picked it hard with a hint of yellow, let ripen until soft, took one week

Most likely bug stings. They ripen ok.
