Nice going, Mike! Centuries ago, I spent a whole school year in Manila and that was when I contracted the Lansium Crazyium tropical disease. These are by far my #1 fruit.

Looks delicious. From the cut up pix, seeds count looks Ok to me even with this small specimen. For me, it's the seed to flesh ratio that counts not the seeds count by itsef.
Also, cherilata is a type, not a name.

I'd listen to Rob's advice. If possible, practice on the graft you really intend to do. It makes no sens to practice on grafting avocado which is somewhat easy when you really intent to graft mango (hard to graft). it is even silly to practice grafting mango when really you intent to graft lychee.
Grafting is not just the cutting. It englobes the understanding of the nature of the rootstock and the scion.

But if you're objective here is to find a cutter, then a utility knife like a box cutter, retractable at desired length, would do just fine. I've tried the most expensive grafting knives endorsed by so called "pros", believe me, they're all snake oil.

Unless you have a farm where you could plant the Jamun away from all structures, keeping them in large pots is the only option as their roots are quite destructive and the juice from fallen fruits could stain permanently. People also report that the juice could also be corrosive to metal.
In Florida, you could find trees along highways and even at Disney around Animal Kingdom park for example. So quite invasive.

However, they are quite popular in India and SE Asia and I'm quite fond of them. I grew up with these so I'm a bit biased here. The fruit has astringency taste only if not picked completely ripe. You tongue will turn deep purple after eating a few of them. I bought a grafted tree of about 5 ft tall and it fruited a year after. It's a big size fruit variety but I don't know the variety name. The taste is cherry with a bit of tart and a little astringency if not completely ripe.


   

Two weeks and 1/2 to germinate. No GA3, just tip filing and bottom heat.

These seeds are super fresh, I bought them from Berto based on Mike's assessments. Two weeks in a ziploc and on a heat mat, the seeds are already starting to open up. I should see the tip of the roots in about 3 days from now and that's when they go to a seedling pot.

The tip is where there is an opening, that's where the root will come out. And yes, you could file too much and scrape out the inside. Just file enough to remove the outer layer. If you see white material, you filed too much.

The medium to use for planting is up to you, SA is not picky but it prefers soil that is on the dry side. I personally use mostly coco coir even though it's a bit more work as you need to compensate every now and then with Cal/Mag/Iron. It's low Ph and that's what most plants prefer.

In So Cal, Maprang is an extremely slow growing plant even in a greenhouse. Ethan (former fastest grafter of the West!) could attest to this as he had them in his greenhouse before.

I used to cover my grafts to "protect from the sun" and sometimes even used a ziploc under the bag or foil but I stopped years ago. The success rate isn't any different whether I cover or not. So my conclusion was that the graft covering was just for my own peace of mind.
