I need to graft Palora onto my Colombian yellow.  The fruit finally ripened in January, two months after turning yellow, but they are tiny. Two spoonfuls of pulp.

Feijoa is a slow grower that wouldn't require much pruning to keep it under 1m. It could also be trimmed as a hedge.

I would be wary to grow pineapple in a front yard due to risk of theft.

Another theory I have heard relates to length of pistil. Short ones (so the pollen is close) are self fertile, long ones are not.

Yeah I got a bit of hail too near the coast. Wasn't a very cold night though, low of 48. Very windy, my passion fruit trellis broke because I had been putting off pruning it till the last fruits ripened, oops.

All 3 for size comparison, fruit from screc in Irvine. The ? after YG is there because that exact tree was not labeled, but by deduction it should have been Yosemite Gold.


Small hand for scale. These are definitely smaller than GN, more of an average size for any mandarin.

I tried all three golds at the south coast station u-pick a couple years back.  I 100% preferred the Shasta gold so that's the only tree I bought.  I have two fruit on my tree now but I might wait a few more weeks to pick - in general my fruit ripens later then the rest of SD.

Yeah, I'm still deciding what I absolutely need to grow. Definitely mango, pineapple, papaya, avocado, guava, some sort of annona, but I may stick to someplace that can grow low chill deciduous fruit rather than tropicals like coconut.

Thanks for starting this thread Shane.  I am considering a move too.. my first thought was to look around Vero Beach. Someplace rural though, I want livestock.

Is this different algae than we had earlier this year in SD? It didn't affect me but one of my friends couldn't make the long walk from Cardiff to the campground.

Pindo palm does stay short, but it has a wide trunk and wingspan, in case that is important.  Excellent fruit however.

Quail don't really fly, they will flush straight up but only 3-4 feet high especially if their wings are clipped. I kept some in my greenhouse one winter but yeah I had to remember to shut the door (my vents are on the roof)

I have been unsuccessful using P. edulis to pollinate P. alata, but I've only tried about a half dozen flowers.

I have been using 1" chicken wire for gopher baskets.  I was going to use 1/2" hardware cloth but Tom del Hotal warned that it would girdle the roots.  There are some 15-20 year old gopher baskets in my yard and they haven't broken down enough for me to pull off the top edge yet.

Brad I will buy those macabee traps off you if SF doesn't want em.  Between the canyon and my neighbors ignoring their gophers I will never be rid of them.
