Nam Doc Mai shaping -two examples (NDM)
« on: September 20, 2014, 01:26:17 PM »
I have only tip pruned these 3-4 year old trees. The fruit is very good plus look at the low squat shape-structure. Makes them container suitable and for cramped situations and when you need to keep the tree low for a PVC frost protection structure

If you have NDM photos please post them too!

my NDM #4 in front yard

my NDM #4 in front yard (again)

my NDM #4 in side yard

Sweet Tart tree growing in a distorted way. There is another tree shading it but now I don't think this is the entire reason. I got 30 fruits in 2014

mailbox flowers. They arrived there all by themselves. I never planted them.

Very nice shape on this grafted mango tree...the scions came from a neighborhood unknown type tree. It makes small green-yellow fruits so probably minimal theft even though it is 6' from the road

__________ on the NDM front yard photos that is Coc mango just to the right supported by white wood cross anchored in cement and Carrie mango in the background

Sweet Tart 3-4 years in ground.....  Coc I got 14 fruits in 2014. Excellent mango. Got it at Excalibur in Lake Worth and Rob-bsbullie was very helpful that day

3 year old NDM pruned per Richard Campbell. The Pickering has only received skirt pruning. Neither tree has been fertilized in 1.5 years - only mulched. I made the mistake of using very fresh (hot) mulch a year ago and got full canopy flushes a few weeks later. I will fertilize them with potassium sulfate this winter.

Zands - Very nice trees!  How far apart did you plant the NDM & Pickering?

My 7 year old regular NDM.

Was a leggy 18 foot tower 2 years ago when I decided to severly prune it to a 2ft stump. Been shaping it since until this August, so hopefully will fruit next season. It's about 7 ft tall now.

Beautifully shaped and very healthy trees Zands, TnTrobbie and Richard...thanks for sharing the pictures!!

Zands, those flowers you have around your mail box (name escapes me at the moment)...I have them in an area
in my yard...they are a little invasive,lol...I trim them a few times a year and have even sprayed them with round-up because it kept growing and volunteers were appearing by themselves where I didn't want them  :-\...they do however bloom almost nonstop...

Nice looking mango trees. These are 3-4 year old tree? Do you only tip after harvest? I'm trying to keep mine that size but they don't bloom when they have fruits so I have not tip them.

Thanks for the compliments from you and everyone. On a mango tree with lots of fruit I tip prune only after the harvest. Depending on the tree it will be 1 or 2 tip pruning. On non-fruiting trees I will get in 2-3 tip pruning per season. I will tip prune all season, trees that have small output....that are just beginning their fruiting lives.

I posted the NDM photos to give people an idea what a squat compact tree NDM#4 is. Pickering is about equal on this

Tip pruning is a failure if you don't get get two or three new branches emerging. I am learning when to gauge this. You tip prune too soon and you get just one branch..... a continuation without bifurcation. Then you end up tip pruning the same location again. I don't like to see this. >:(

@TnTrobbie
Great that you had the guts to cut it back so much. You have gotten very impressive growth on it since. You build up that root system and a mango "comeback" can be big!!! And it comes back the way you like.

ok tip prune after harvest. I had one that did not fruit and I tipped 4 times this summer and the last flush the tree toppled over I though I lost. I staked it down real good it seems Ok. The point being that you can sometimes over tip.

Thanks Richard (sorry for the error).  I'm doing some planning so the advice is appreciated!  It looks like your trees are approx. 8' tall...is that correct?  I see that you are in ST. Pete...where do you get your mango trees from?

All my plants were bought and planted in February 2012 from FL nurseries - Excalibur, Treehouse, POG and Top Tropical. All were in 3 gallon pots (Mahachanok in a 7 gallon root pruner) and cut back to 18-24 inches at planting. Zill's planting care instructions were followed with tip pruning and minor thinning about 3-4 times each summer during 2012 and 2013. Except Pickering, the trees are about 7 feet tall and that is about as tall as I want them to get. Mallika and Mahachanok are spaced 15 feet apart.

i hope someone who has been at longer than me will add his 2 cents ....
But what is the point of tip pruning if all you get is the branch talking back to you  by just continuing out that one branch and not branching out? I have seen this many times. So now I try to judge how new and thick the growth is so that when I tip prune I will get two or three branches growing out of it________ which brings out the bushy tendencies in any mango tree. Most home growers want bushy plus bushy means more possible places for fruits to grow from
