Pau, that sounds like a winner.  Next year I should be able to do a taste test, make brix reading and give feedback of all the seedlings again.

I will be adding 3 more seedling varieties on this list soon, when I receive the cuttings to graft on my tree.

If anyone else feels they have a seedling tree which gives very good to excellent tasting loquats then send me a message so that we can add your variety to this list.

Thanks,
Kaz

27. KT6-Karen_Kino, highest brix=30.

Brief info on the new addition Mimi's loquat.  This is a fruit seed that was brought back from Spain in 2002 or 2003 by his mom when she went there for a vacation. His mom planted her seeds about 4-7 years ago in a pot. The plant grew to over 6 feet tall. It still has not fruited yet so I'm volunteering to help speed up the fruiting process time by grafting the scions to my in ground large loquat trees (3 different ones). We hope to see fruits in the next few years.

He lives in Philadelphia, so they bring in the loquat every time it gets to cold outside.

PL1 & 2 are from Pau, he describes the fruits on the earlier post here on page 1.

Jaden is a seedling variety with large orange flesh fruits. Grown by the Edgar Valdivia.

Sorry, the KT2-OCBC_Gail is the latest name change. It was Keiko (her daughter) but I changed it to the mom's name. I already have other Keiko loquat trees that I named my seedling tree.

So, KT2-OCBC_Gail is what it will be from this point forward. It is the parent tree of my KT1-Kosmic.

Did anyone else find a good new seedling tree that they are growing since last year?

If you did, please post it here so we can hear about your new variety.

My cousins have a bunch of loquat trees on their property. They have a cluster of about 5 tree growing together with monsteras underneath and a few others growing around the property. I was at their house a few days ago, and the loquats are starting to flower, so unfortunately no photos.

Throughout all these trees, there is a lot of variation - some are mouth-pluckeringly sour and some are sweet and tangy.
I have 2 favourites.
One is a white-yellow skinned, white fleshed one that has a pineapple like flavour. It is larger than the other loquats (which are all small-ish, normal seedling size), and is very pleasant tasting. It is one of the last to fruit in the season.
The other one I like is a typical orange loquat. Last year I tried a commercial loquat, and I just thought it was too sweet and not sour at all. This loquat is nice and sweet, with good flavour but also some sourness to complement the sweetness. Better than any commercial fruits.

I will speak more when they are fruiting...

Rob, try to take some photos of the loquat fruit if you can. Even if they are not ripe yet, then when it ripens take more photos of the fruit so we can see how large they are. Need to cut the fruit in half as well and take a photo so we know if the flesh color is white, yellow, or orange.

Thanks.

Note:

I did get fruits for the first time on,
23. PL2- submitted by Pau

Fruits are still not ripe, when they are ready, I will take some photos and brix reading and post here.

This weekend I will go visit Edgar to see his loquat tree. He tells me the Jaden loquat just started to get ripe so I hope there are a few fruits for me to bring home and taste test, take a brix reading. Will post results by next Monday.

24. Jaden- submitted by Steve B.

I have Jaden scion given to me by Steve, but the graft is not large enough for fruits, maybe next year.

I added the new release of my seedling tree,
5. KT24-Ronni. First time fruiting this year. Fruit is medium to large, white flesh.

This loquat seems to be a good one. The fruits have large clusters of medium to large fruits. Flesh is white, taste is very good. Will take brix reading today when I have time and post.

You can check out my For Sale - New Loquat Release.

Update on Jaden fruits from this year's visit to Edgar.

Here's Edgar giving us a tour of his fruit garden. We had about 6-8 people that were at his place. The big tree next to Edgar is his lucuma tree from his home town.

Thank you Edgar:

I saw this one on Facebook that mostly produces these small seeds. The person said it does produce a small to medium seed on fruits occasionally as well. I had never ran into an almost seedless variety before so thought it was interesting. Is this something that is common or worth propagating?

Yes, definitely worth it. I can also be used to cross pollinate with some other good tasting loquats and see if you can get a fruit with smaller seeds.

I just noticed I had one loquat variety, forgot which one it was, but I saved the seeds because it was way too small for normal loquat fruits. I'll try to take a photo of the seeds I saved, too bad I forgot which variety it was that had this. It must have been one of the newer grafts I have since it didn't have a lot of fuits yet, but it was good. I didn't notice how small the seeds were until I saved it and it was only this one variety with these mini seeds, not as small as the ones you show.

Fishie, was the person on FB from outside of the US? That fruit almost looks like a seedless loquat, but I wonder why it looks like there is such a big cavity in the fruit like someone removed the large seed and got rid of it before taking the photo.

Yes, you are right. The cavity is a bit sus lol. I saw it in the California Rare Fruit Growers, San Diego Chapter Group. I'll send you a link and you can look into it  ;D.

Not seedless, but I have one that’s producing really small and aborted seeds.  Picture of the seeds from first fruit but have had a few with the same aborted seeds.  Regular sized seeds from a different variety for comparison.

My daughter just found another one.

Closeup to show the aborted seeds

Only got 8 fruits so far.  Will have to wait till next year to see if it's a consistent characteristic.
