Strange happenings - what is eating my mango
« on: May 28, 2023, 10:11:11 PM »
I was under a sweet tart tree and saw a flash of yellow.  It was too small to be a ripened fruit.  On close inspection it was a see hanging from the tree.  Then I saw another.  Something had eaten all the fruit off the seed and the fruit did not fall off the tree.  In the last couple of days I have watched the same thing happening to three more fruit.  Slowly being eaten from the op down while still on the tree.  I had never observed this before, have you seen this and what is the culprit.
I have no clue what an eat the entire fruit without breaking the fruit off the tree.

I added some pictures.  Some completely eaten and a couple in progress.  Whatever it is has targeted one tree and does come back to finish fruits it starts eating.

Squirrels will do that; I haven't seen them return to already damaged hanging fruit, but I've definitely seen them munching

What sort of parrots do you have loose (feral pets) in Florida?
They will sit on the pit and eat the fruit.

Oh wow!! That is very strange and quite a few of them. I've had a couple of mangoes that have been partially pecked on but nothing quite as severe as yours, I assumed mine was caused by birds pecking at it or possibly squirrels?

Setting up a camera is a great idea...Please let us know if you do find out what/who is causing that type of eating damage!

Trail cameras are you friends. They're not too expensive and they catch everything that happens out there while you're sleeping. Until I set mine up, I had no idea how much wildlife activity was going on in my yard every night! Most people would be surprised what's "out there" even in an urban setting.

If they are rats, is there a good and easy wat to redirect their interest.  For now they have targeted only one tree.  There are several other trees close by.
I am happy to have them eat fruit on the ground but not get up into the tree.
Would bobcat pee or a wooden owl do the job?

It is a rodent for sure. Squirrels are the most likely culprit in my part of the state, but it could very easily be rats. Rats tend to do their work at night and squirrels do it durring the day. Unfortunately, my experience with pest control runs along these lines: if its fast and legal its not good, if its good and legal its not fast, if its fast and good...its not legal.

Time for bagging all the easy to reach fruit. I know it's extra effort but it's a good "insurance policy" so you have clean fruits for family and friends. Im going out early mornig this weekend and will bag em up. They do get desperate and try chewing through the mesh but the mouth full of plastic must ruin the flavor lol.
