2025 Spring Yangmei (Myrica rubra) Group Buy
« on: January 21, 2025, 04:57:23 PM »
I’ve received many inquiries about purchasing Yangmei trees, and I’m considering organizing the fourth round group buy this spring (mid-February to early March 2025).

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Please share any expectations regarding the starting date, preferred varieties, pricing, or anything else you’d like to discuss about this group buy.

Looking forward to your feedback!

bill

I'm always interested in this fruit. I read that it is cold tolerant to zone 8 or 9. Is it true? If so I would love to buy some!

Are these plants going through the USDA and just package in a way for easier inspection?

That yellow variety sure looks good.

I'm interested but I'm nowhere near CA.  If it is somehow possible to reship them I'll get a few.  If not, I'll just wait for you guys who got too many to resell some :)

I'm in. Bill had organized some of the smoothest GB that just kept getting better. Too bad the trees required so much skill, knowledge, and luck to keep alive. Now I hope to be better prepared with all kinds of rootstock ready to graft onto and keep the roots quarantined per Simon's recommendations :)

Seems like yesterday since beicadad stared the current modern craze group buy down in SD. March 2021?

I have had zero success with previous bare root tree orders. This method is not suitable for me. I suspect my location in San Diego may have contributed to the low success rate, as I may have received trees that were already stressed from a long journey. I would consider ordering trees that are shipped alive with growing media like in the picture. However, it is likely too late to plan for this year as the weather is warming up soon, what would be the plan to get them shipped to us and how soon after receiving them ?

I wasn’t involved in the last order so I would be interested in this one. I could pickup from the Bay Area.  My biggest question is about the reliability of the varieties being sold. I’m concerned about ordering trees from overseas only to find out several years later that they are not what I ordered and are instead unknown varieties. During previous orders have the trees been proven to be the correct varieties?

I’d be interested in a few if you can ship to FL. Maybe we can bundle the FL orders into 1 to ship and then distribute from here? Whatever makes more sense for you.

This species grafts onto wax myrtle right? I have that growing wild on my land. We often get temps below 20F and can get snow as it snowed 4 or so inches last night in the FL panhandle. It is 100% confirmed it can handle that and grow here?
Trying to grow it all!

Anyone know if these grow / fruit in the tropics? Or is more a subtropical zone fruit? Does it require any chill temps?

Yeah probably want to stay away from them in the tropics.
Oscar fruited it in HI, but he barely gets fruits from what I hear.
I mean the seeds can benefit from cold stratification, so its a more temperate/subtropical tree if anything.
But wusu variety is supposed to be good in warm places.
My friends in SFL I am not sure how theirs are doing. But chill hours may be a factor in flowers.

Cold stratification of the seeds is real. I put them out this spring, only one or two germinated... I left the pot outside after it got cold for a month or so.... Now some of the other seeds are finally germinating immediately after into my much darker (but warmer) garage.

+1 for me.
