Fertilizing and Rain for next weekend!
« on: November 07, 2025, 10:53:55 AM »
Having lernt to graft a handful of different scions to my Manila mango and got the irrigation finished, finally. I'd like to take advantage of the free .75" of water and give my mango trees some fertilizer. Is this the wrong time of year to feed them? I know I'm supposed to feed when they start flowering but with all of the grafts I'm not sure when they will bloom yet. How about Langbenite, Gypsum and Azomite as well?

Thanks.

Bump, and added some shameless fotos of the new fence and mulch. Pretty happy right now!

Here’s the Manila rootstock with early, mid and late season (I hope!) mostly low vigor grafted scions from this summer. Ice Cream, Zebda, Pickering, Lemon Zest, Sweet Tart, Angie and M-4. I left the neighbor a nice dog leg branch of 100% Manila. I might graft onto that part next summer since he’s a really cool guy.

That’s going to be a nice tree in a couple of years.  Add the after pictures if you can.

Thanks! Very happy with the results. Will be planting mixed lettuce seeds this weekend in the small raised bed.

So fresh and so clean! Love it, will be nice to see everything fill in. Keep us posted!

Potassium sulfate seems to be good, at least here in SoFL, prior to blooming, and also after fruit have set. Micros are something else to consider.

I think it's fine to apply a light application of Langbeinite, Gypsum and Azomite prior to the upcoming rains in Mid November. I normally apply them prior to the last major storms in SoCal which usually is late February or early March.

Good Luck

Sprayed everything with micros and spread Langbenite, Gypsum, Blood Meal around the drip lines of all of them except the fig, peach and nectarine. Going to get to the Azomite tomorrow since there is no work for Veteran’s Day here at Naval Air Station North Island.

Thank you to all our Veterans out there!

I just finished planting 24 new trees at 11pm last night… I was trying to get them in the ground before this nice round of precipitation. My back hurts!

Not sure about your mango question… I am a mango newb. I planted two on Manila rootstock and two on turpentine to see what works in my area. One each Alphonso, one Kiett, one Valencia Pride.

Here are some pictures of the pre rain planting spree (I discovered a novel technique to test a hole for 15 gallon trees: place a six year inside)

It looks like the forecast has shifted a little bit. It’s supposed to start in South San Diego around 10 or 11 PM tonight. Keep your children and small furry animals tethered as this is a lot of rain for a 12 hour period. Trees will be ecstatic!

Hoping for a good drench!  Sized up some plants in new pots before the rain hit last night and hit a lot of plants with some fertilizer.  Perfect time to move plants around since the heat has faded.

Haha my wife has been busy in the yard the past couple of days. Same same, up planting her various herbs and declaring that the mixed lettuce and arugula have poked their heads up in the raised bed!
I just want to see some serious weather and partake of this free water!

Never seen so many people excited about such little rain :)
Just kidding. I hope it comes at a manageable rate and the correct volume so as to minimize the risk of slides and other unfortunate effects of too much rain in too little time.

The only thing more rare than rain in San Diego is a professional sports championship!

Here she comes!  I want to see a couple inches out of this system, at minimum.  The train of systems behind this looks promising.

Santa Barbara has already received a lot of rain. My old place was directly beside the "San Marcos Pass" weather station, which has received 8" of rain already.

Wish I'd gotten more fertilizer down in the yard, but rain alone seems to juice plants up pretty good in comparison to well or city water.

I’m always amazed at how much more rain you guys get in SB than we do on the coast in LA. There’s orographics for you I guess… (PV averages 13 inches per year! Last year we only got 6…)

It is certainly an anomaly in California for how south it is. Even just 40 min north, the totals can be half. I see why the Chumash natives did so well here. This is a really great start to the rain year, but I am cautious to say this will be a great year overall. Can't recall which year it was when it was hot and heavy with the rain to start and then stayed dry all the way till March

After all of the hype we only got about .90” with another .5” this week. Man, those weather people sure are full of shite sometimes. Okay, most of the time!

How useful to trees is rain late fall/early winter? When they are dormant, is water even useful? I would think only Spring showers are useful leading into active growing periods. I am not an expert, so I am quite curious.

Non-expert take:
In SoCal citrus and avocado are hanging on the trees. We get such little rainfall that it seems like a light spread of fertilizer can't hurt and it gets well distributed. If we get no more rain it will sit in the soil until the roots find it eventually. My big Manila rootstock grafting project has only recently been getting proper amounts of water after the back yard redo. Also planted a small Sweet Tart which needs a kick in the pants to get going along with two 4' papayas.
