Top dressing soil in humid zone
« on: November 16, 2025, 02:43:42 PM »
Hi, I’m in Central FL and have a problem doing the top dressing fertilization method, as the organic matter seems to always gather mold, which proves detrimental to sensitive plants.  Does anyone else deal with this and what is the fix?  Many thanks!

What color do you see? A picture would help.

Has the mold actually passed to a plant and caused a problem?
The biomass is supposed to be broken down by fungi and bacteria’s.

What are you using to top dress? Manure (possibly uncomposted)? Do your trees definitely need it?

Are you sure it's mold and not beneficial fungus?

I'm growing at a very high density with a lot of groundcover and support plants. If I let it become a complete jungle then I have problems with mold, scale and insects. The extreme density can prevent airflow and UV light exposure which keep mold in check. Everything grows healthier when I prune aggressively and remove plants that begin to crowd others and cause problems.

Start by thinning out the existing plants by pruning and removing so you can get some air circulation and UV light penetration. Take a break from the organic matter and switch to a granular fertilizer for now, or stop fertilizing for a while and see what happens. Water less, let the garden dry out a little bit. Maybe wood chips would help.

What are you applying top dressing of fertilizer to?
It is for trees? or in a vegetable patch?

The best thing to do would be to apply beneficial microorganisms. If there are pathogenic fungi then the micros should handle that and at the same time convert the biomass to food for your plants.  Some people make their own micro cultures but we buy laboratory produced microorganism cultures.  Investigate EM for a start.

It’s for trees in container

Pull back the mulch, sprinkle and mix your top dressing into the top inch or so of the soil, and replace the mulch.
