Marcus pumpkin black avocado
« on: November 16, 2025, 03:37:36 PM »
Anyone heard anything about this variety?

I’ve now seen two different nurseries, who tend to carry the more exclusive varieties, advertising it for sale.

I’ve gotten almost no detail or description on it other than it being rare, large like the normal Marcus pumpkin and fruiting around the same time.

Seems to have popped up out of nowhere with little reason as to what makes it preferable to the original (if it even is different).

There was a thread on here recently with a video of a pine island farmer talking about that variety.  He thought the original was better if I remember correctly.  The video also may be on the fruitful trees youtube page.

It's probably a Marcus Pumpkin seedling that got pollinated with some Mexican genetics. The original Marcus Pumpkin isn't anything special in my book, it does get some attention for increased cold-hardiness. It's not very drought tolerant and typically doesn't make many fruit.

The Sleepy Lizard guy leased an old avocado grove mostly planted with Marcus Pumpkin and that's when Paul started making a big deal about it. It's a fairly popular tree in my area but I can think of many varieties I would plant first. Talpeno sounds a lot more exciting.

CC what’s the rub with Talpeno?

I was in the same boat as you in regards to Marcus pumpkin, there are better options out there and this “black” variety does not necessarily seem to be better than the predecessor, just similar.

Talpeno is not widely grown. Praised by Steve at Fruitscapes during his lecture as an early season Nishikawa. Creamy texture, ready in August. Turns black when ripe.

What I've read about it is that it's a good variety, huge fruit, but minimal production.

I noticed the normal Marcus Pumpkin tree (large one) also does not have a lot of fruits, but they do get large and tastes good from my tasting.

I’m not usually a fan of the Florida-type avocados but I do enjoy Marcus Pumpkin. I wouldn’t call it oily but definitely creamy with a nice sweet flavor.

I had the same experience with my first tasting of Marcus Pumpkin.  It fooled my expectations.
Contempt prior to investigation.
I wouldn't plant a tree with my limited space. But, I also wouldn't turn down the fruit if it is offered.

Thanks for the info everyone. We’ll see how many get on the hype train for this variety so we can get some personal accounts on taste and productivity in a few years.

I have ran into a couple of nurseries selling it. Most recently I saw Jack and the beanstalk, out of Loxahatchee (west of West Palm area)
